My partner Chris spent a long time commuting 300miles twice a week for a fairly good job over the period of 4-5years. He didn’t mind the driving which on a good day would take 3 hours but on a bad day took anything upto 9hours! What he hated was putting in a whole day at work then going back to a hotel room, sitting on his own with no company and eating junk food/lonely restaurant meals five days a week. One day he woke up and decided to create a website to solve his problem. www.fivenights.com was conceived around 10 years ago…..however he was working full-time so didn’t act on the idea until around 6 years ago. This gives the homeowner their room back at weekends for family/friends to stay in during visits and also earns them a good income. In the UK homeowners could earn £4,250 a year tax free from this income. The lodger/roommate also got benefits such as access to home comforts like a washing machine & cooker. The most important thing we found was people like human contact so having someone to talk to at the end of a tiring day was invaluable. Our homeowners are advised to price their rooms fairly by charging five sevenths of the price they would charge for a full time room rental.
